Laloo's daughter weds amid fanfare

Amid controversy over alleged use of muscle power and misuse of official machinery, the mega wedding of Rohini Acharya, the second daughter of Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Laloo Prasad Yadav, was solemnised in Patna on Friday night.

Rohini, dressed in pink lehenga with green embroidery, exchanged jaimala [garland] with Samresh, a software engineer from the United States.

Rajya Sabha Chairperson Najma Heptullah, chief ministers of Chhattisgarh and Jammu and Kashmir Ajit Jogi and Farooq Abdullah, Union ministers Syed Shahanawaz Hussain and Ravi Shankar Prasad and film star Sunil Shetty were among those present at the wedding.

Hundreds of commoners jostled with security personnel to catch a glimpse of the event.

President K R Narayanan and Vice-President Krishan Kant sent their blessings through their representatives while Congress president Sonia Gandhi, preoccupied with the All India Congress Committee session, deputed Ajit Jogi, Oscar Fernandes and L P Shahi.

There was thunderous applause from visitors, as Laloo and Rabri posed for photographs with the groom's father, Ranvijay Singh, an income tax commissioner from Mumbai.

There were around 300 policemen and 150 officials outside the bunglow on security detail, though none were seen in uniform inside.

The wedding feast consisted of litti [a Bihari dish], pulao, puree, paneer, fried brinjal , jelebee, gulab jamun and ice cream.
