Troops on riot duty in Gujarat withdrawn

The Indian Army has ended its deployment in riot-struck Gujarat.

The army columns that were deployed to quell the riots in Gujarat were withdrawn on Tuesday morning and have been sent back to operational areas close to the Pakistan border.

Army spokesman Col Shruti Kant said the withdrawal began in the morning and would be over by evening.

Army had deployed over a brigade strength of soldiers to fight riots that broke out in Gujarat after the Godhra carnage February 27.

Army was deployed along the Pakistan border after the terrorist attack on Indian Parliament on December 13 last.
