India brushes aside EU resolution on Gujarat riots

India on Monday brushed aside the European Union resolution on Gujarat communal violence saying it did not accept 'prescriptions from outside' on internal affairs of the country.

"It is an internal affair and there is no doubt about it. External prescriptions from anywhere in the world cannot help in providing the medicine to handle the situation," an external affairs ministry spokesperson said.

The European Parliament while terming the Gujarat situation as a 'topical and urgent subject of major importance' has observed trouble in the state had not affected other states.

Observing that 'India is one of the largest secular democratic countries, in which several communities and religions live peacefully together', it said, "The fact that troubles in Gujarat have not affected other parts of the Indian Union testifies to the underlying strengths of India's democratic and tolerant society."

Responding to questions on the EU resolution, the spokesperson said India has conveyed to its key interlocutors that it was taking steps to redress the situation in Gujarat and that the government made no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste or creed.

She made it clear that India did not welcome a political debate outside the country on the Gujarat issue, but said it was prepared to discuss the issue away from the media glare.

"There is no change in India's stand in this regard," he said maintaining that New Delhi was not trying to lecture the world community and a self-correcting process was on in midst of a vigorous countrywide debate on it.
