Over 25,000 people migrate from border areas

Over 25,000 people have migrated from villages along the international border with Pakistan and the Line of Control in Jammu, Rajouri and Kathua districts following fierce exchanges of fire in the last 48 hours, official sources said in Jammu on Saturday.

About 3,000 families comprising 15,000 people have migrated from various villages close to the border in Kathua district since Friday, the sources said, adding that several people had taken shelter in government schools in Chadwal, Madeen, Chakri, Sherpur, Raipur, Marwal and Mawa villages.

Some of the families have also gone to their relations in the district or other places in Jammu division, they said.

Nine thousand people have migrated from several border villages in the Samba area of Jammu and taken shelter in the SIDCO complex and dak bungalow in Samba, they said.

In Kathua district, 2,000 migrations were reported on Friday, sources added.

Nearly 200 people have left Nanga village in Ramgarh tehsil and 100 others have migrated from hamlets in R S Pura area since Thursday.

Besides, several families have migrated from border villages of Rajouri district and taken shelter in adjoining villages.

The authorities have asked the district administration to provide necessary facilities, including rations, to the border migrants.
