JD-U leader quits party, might join Congress

Mohan Prakash, the general secretary of the Janata Dal-United -- an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government -- on Thursday quit the party.

Describing as "shameful" the response of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chief Minister Narendra Modi to the situation in Gujarat, he said he was also quitting socialist politics, "which has lost its relevance".

Though he said he had no plans of joining the Congress, Prakash said if the party invited him "why shall I not accept it".

The Congress was better than other parties, he added.

He said the country was having major problems, which parties with "narrow mind and short vision" could not tackle.

Prakash said the people had great expectations from Vajpayee, but "he has belied their aspirations. The way the government is functioning, it has become a government of national shame".

He said some leaders of the erstwhile Janata Dal had made the party a "private limited" organisation, as a result of which the BJP proliferated.
