Manohar Joshi elected speaker of Lok Sabha

Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi was on Friday elected speaker of the Lok Sabha by voice vote.

"I declare Manohar Joshi has been chosen speaker of the House," Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed announced after the voting.

Manohar JoshiThe resolution for 65-year-old Joshi's election was proposed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and seconded by Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

Eleven similar resolutions were moved by Union ministers George Fernandes, Sharad Yadav, Murasoli Maran and Omar Abdullah and Shiv Sena member Anant Geete and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee.

Later, Vajapyee along with Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan escorted Joshi to the coveted chair.

The post had fallen vacant following the death of G M C Balayogi in a helicopter crash in March.

Welcoming the new speaker, Vajpayee said while discharging his responsibility as Maharashtra chief minister earlier, Joshi had not severed his links with the educational field as a teacher.

The prime minister hoped Joshi would conduct the House as per provisions of the Constitution and in an impartial manner.

"The dignity of the House should be maintained and it should function properly as per rules," Vajpayee said.

Gandhi also offered felicitations to Joshi and hoped that he would do justice to issues of public importance.

Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Somnath Chatterjee said Joshi should not surrender himself to any "remote control" and carry the business in accordance with traditions of the House.

Telugu Desam Party leader K Yerran Naidu said the speaker should give an opportunity to all members, especially the back benchers, to raise their issues.

Former prime minister Chandrashekhar hoped Joshi would maintain his impartiality even in the face of difficult situations.

Leaders of various other parties also felicitated Joshi on his election.
