Walkout in LS over Gujarat issue

Congress and other opposition members on Tuesday walked out of the Lok Sabha expressing dissatisfaction over the government's response on the issue of alleged closure of relief camps in Gujarat.

Responding to members' concern during zero hour, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said the Centre had no information that the camps were being closed.

"Government is conscious of its duties under Article 355 of the Constitution and we will discharge them thoroughly," Advani asserted.

"Both the Houses have discussed the Gujarat issue in detail and "I don't think that I need to say anything more on the matter," he said.

As the home minister was speaking, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Somnath Chatterjee, who had raised the issue, said apart from his own information, there were reports in the media that the camps were being wound up.

Advani retorted that many baseless stories appeared in newspapers and sometimes the government verified their veracity.

"There is no information that camps are being closed," he said.

Advani told the House that the Centre was making all efforts to restore peace in Gujarat.

As the home minister started leaving the House, the opposition members strongly protested and walked out.
