Hurriyat should set its house in order: Nazir Geelani

Sumir Kaul in New Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights chief Nazir Geelani has charged All Party Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Gani Bhat with being clad in an "attire of arrogance".

In a letter, a copy of which was released to the press, the London-based Nazir also slammed Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for criticising the recent meeting of some Kashmiri leaders in Dubai

"I am constrained to say that Hurriyat seems to have parted company with politics of mature judgement and an enlightened conscience. It has clad itself in an attire of arrogance," he said.

He said Geelani "has to respect the constitutional discipline of Hurriyat".

Nazir, who was also one of the participants at the three-day meeting, said: "There is no room for the malafides attributed to Dubai meeting by Hurriyat leadership."

He warned that the blame game was "dangerous" and did not match with the requirements of a "mature judgement".

The London-based leader said, "I was appalled to see that Hurriyat could not formulate a well-considered and a united response of affirmation or non-affirmation of the Dubai meeting. Each constituent hastened to boil its own pot and ran down the street to hang its washing to dry."

He said many opportunities for people's welfare had been lost due to the "heads I win and tails you loose" attitude of the Hurriyat leaders.

"Hurriyat has to set its own house in order and learn to believe that there are more than seven Kashmiris (executive of the amalgam) who would either take Kashmir to Pakistan, to India or make it independent state."

"Unfortunately Hurriyat seems to burn the candle from both sides and it is committing itself to a political euthanasia," he said.

Taking a dig at the Hurriyat's formula of talking to militant leaders in case India allowed them to travel to Pakistan, he said, "Hurriyat would be acquiring a serious criminal liability if it misleads the people of Kashmir by saying that it has any control on the militant segment of the resistance."
