Gill surprised by reports of
his Gujarat assignment

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Former director general of Punjab police K P S Gill has expressed surprise at news reports of his likely appointment as security advisor to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to rediff.com on Thursday, Gill said that as of now no one from the ministry of home affairs had spoken to him about any such development.

"I have seen news reports concerning my appointment as advisor to Chief Minister Narendra Modi. But so far no one has sounded me out on this appointment. I have returned to Delhi only last night. Let us see what happens next. As of newspaper reports, I have little faith in them," he said.

When contacted, an aide of Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said that the minister has been going through various proposals to tackle the worsening law and order situation in Gujarat and this could be one of the options.

"We have received various proposals from eminent persons. This could be one of them. Since Gill successfully led the campaign against terrorism in Punjab, there is a feeling that he is the best choice under the circumstances," he said.

Asked if the home minister has been in touch with Gill, the aide said that this could be done in due course of time.

Another proposal that is being discussed is to constitute a special team headed by IPS officer Kiran Bedi to go into cases of rape and other atrocities against women in Gujarat. This could be an all-women team and would report directly to the home minister.
