Seven killed in fresh violence in Gujarat

Seven people were killed in fresh violence in Ahmedabad, Mehsana and Anand districts of Gujarat on Saturday night.

Three people were killed, two in police firing, and 14 injured in Gomtipur area of Ahmedabad city, where mobs went on rampage setting ablaze houses, firing from private weapons, lobbing crude bombs and pelting stones, the police said on Sunday.

Army and paramilitary forces assisted the police, which fired 118 rounds to contain the violence in Gomtipur, which was placed under curfew.

Tension prevailed in Kadi town of Ehsana district where an indefinite curfew was imposed following fresh violence after a 70-year-old man was killed by a group of people, who also indulged in rioting and arson.

In the adjoining village of Adudra, 60 houses were set ablaze by a mob, the police said, adding that about 500 affected people were shifted to relief camps.

In Anand district one person was killed in stone throwing and three were injured in police firing in Petlad town. Two persons were killed, one of them in police firing, in Khambat town of the district early Sunday morning, the police said.
