22 PWG militants surrender in Andhra

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Twenty-two Naxalites surrendered before the Hyderabad police on Thursday even as a two-day bandh called by the People's War Group evoked no response in Andhra Pradesh.

The 22 cadres surrendered before Director General of Police Pervaram Ramulu in the afternoon.

The DGP said they put down their weapons, as they were vexed with the mindless violence being carried out by the PWG.

Those who surrendered included Bandakindi Gopi, Himagiri area committee secretary, carrying a reward of Rs 200,000 on his head.

Meanwhile, the bandh called by the PWG evoked virtually no response in the state, including the extremist-affected Telangana region.

"We have taken all precautions in view of the two-day bandh call. So far, no incident has taken place," Ramulu pointed out.
