Assam parties agree on formation of Bodo council

An all-party meeting on Wednesday agreed on the creation of the proposed Bodoland Autonomous Council (BTC) with adequate constitutional safeguards for non-Bodo people living in the area, an official spokesman said in Guwahati.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi explained to the parties that the proposed BTC is expected to end the simmering Bodo problem, he said.

In an unanimous resolution adopted in the meeting, the parties demanded constitutional safeguards to cover political, social, economic, cultural, educational, language and land rights of non-Bodos as well as other safeguards, he said.

"This requires suitable amendments to the sixth schedule of the Constitution," Gogoi said.

The participants were of the view that the boundaries of the proposed BTC should be demarcated with reference to a 1999 notification on the issue, the spokesman said.

Representatives of the Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, BJP, CPI, CPI-M and the CPI-ML participated in the meeting, he said.
