Courts cannot solve Ayodhya issue: Kanchi seer

Referring to the Babri Masjid-Ram Temple issue, the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Jayendra Saraswati, on Friday said that the courts cannot provide a solution to the controversy.

He said, "They (courts) cannot solve problems, but can only give punishments."

"These days, it is not a question of victory or defeat. It is a matter of justice and injustice. It is a fight over a small piece of land," he said in his sadbhavna message to Muslims on the occasion of Hijri 1423, the beginning of the New Year for the Muslim community.

In the message the Sankaracharya said that no religion advocated destruction of other religions.

"People are sent to propagate their religion and not to kill anyone. Hindus and Muslims are like Ram and Lakshman. We are all the sons of Bharat Mata. Our message is of adarsh (idealism), pyar ka and prem ka," the seer said.

He added, "We cannot fight in the name of religion and culture. Everyone of us is an Indian."

Meanwhile, the Sankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Puri, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati Dev Tirth said that the final decision on the construction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya should be left to the four Sankaracharyas.

Neither Parliament nor the courts can solve the issue, he added.
