Shila daan to be outside acquired land

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Ram Janambhoomni Nyas president Ramchandra Das Paramhans said on Friday that he would conduct shila daan at Ramkot Mohalla, which lies outside the government-acquired land in Ayodhya.

However, he did not disclose the exact location where the programme would be held.

The Nyas chief, who had threatened to commit suicide if prevented from carrying out the programme, said he would follow the Supreme Court's directive and stay away from the acquired site.

The change in stand followed hectic parleys with top central minister, including Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Defence Minister George Fernandes. Uttar Pradesh government emissaries and senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders also held talks with Paramhans.

When asked the reason behind the climb down, Paramhans said: "I have always maintained that I will not set foot on an inch of the acquired land."
