Bangladesh's opposition MPs threaten to resign

Bangladesh's main opposition Awami League on Thursday announced that its members would resign from Parliament to protest against the government's misrule and its move to remove the portrait of the country's founding father from government offices.

"All Awami League MPs will hand over their resignations to party president Sheikh Hasina who will submit it at an appropriate time," party general secretary Zillur Rahman told reporters.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the party's central working committee and the parliamentary party held in Dhaka on Thursday to review the five-month rule of the Bangladesh National Party-led alliance government, he said.

The Awami League has already been boycotting parliament for some time now and the latest decision comes less than a week after Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia renewed her call to the opposition to end the boycott of parliament.

Hasina rejected the call saying they could not join parliament as long her party's activists and minorities continued to be persecuted.

On Wednesday, Jute Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed said that the opposition should resign since they were not attending parliament.

The Awami League, which won 62 seats in the October elections, now holds 58 seats in the 300-member house.
