Govt's stand on puja rocks LS

A determined opposition, angered by the government's stand in the Supreme Court favouring a symbolic bhoomi pujan on the acquired land adjacent to disputed site in Ayodhya, on Wednesday forced adjournment of the Lok Sabha for the day.

As the House reassembled in the afternoon after two adjournments, opposition members were on their feet demanding a statement by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was not in his seat.

Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley, who was willing to make a statement on behalf of the government, was not allowed to speak by the opposition.

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani was seen confabulating with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan even as opposition members raised anti-government slogans.

After Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed's repeated pleas to restore order were ignored, he adjourned the House for the day.
