Haokip elected speaker of Manipur assembly

Journalist-turned-politician Telsin Ngamjang Haokip of the Congress was on Tuesday elected speaker of the 60-member Manipur assembly, defeating opposition nominee Okram Joy Singh of Manipur People's Party by 12 votes.

Haokip secured 36 votes while Joy Singh got 24. All the sixty members had cast their votes.

A former editor of local daily Thinghliang Post, Haokip was first elected to the Manipur assembly as an independent in 1990.

He later joined the Manipur People's Party and was elected on a party ticket in 1995. He lost the elections in 2000.

Haokip contested on a Congress ticket in the recently held polls and was elected from Saikot constituency.
