Bihar police raids VHP office, arrests
2 activists

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

In a bid to check the activities of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad before its March 15 deadline to conduct a 'symbolic' puja in Ayodhya, the Bihar police on Tuesday raided its office in Patna and arrested two activists.

More such raids might be conducted in the next two days, police sources indicated.

"The government may order arrest of some more activists in view of the VHP's decision to (conduct) symbolic puja in Ayodhya on March 15," the sources said

Patna Superintendent of Police O N Bhaskar said that the police was interrogating the arrested VHP activists about the movement of karsevaks from the state. The state government had ordered district officials to prevent the karsevaks from going to Ayodhya and arrest them if necessary.

Reports had indicated that hundreds of karsevaks had managed to sneak out of the state everyday. "A large number of Hindu activists are going to Ayodhya from different pockets of Bihar," admitted a government official.

Last week, the government had banned a training camp of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and raided its offices in different parts of Gaya district in view of the communal tension in the country following the violence in Gujarat.
