Pak ready to sign extradition treaty with India

Pakistan on Saturday said that it is ready to hand over 20 criminals and terrorists wanted by India, if an extradition treaty is signed between the two countries.

Going back to history would not serve any purpose, Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar told a group of Indian reporters in Islamabad referring to the list of 20 criminals and terrorists wanted by India.

"The list of 20 criminals and terrorists forwarded by India has nothing to do with the December 13 attack on Indian Parliament. Some cases even stretch back to over 20 years," he said.

He added that Pakistan was ready to negotiate a treaty with India to enable extradition of wanted criminals.

He said that any case of extradition was a complicated legal process, involving a lot of documentation to support the case.

Asked how Pakistan was willing to extradite Sheikh Omar Saeed to the US, wanted in connection with the kidnapping of American journalist Daniel Pearl, he said that the US has provided a lot of documentation in support of its request for Sheikh's extradition.

He said that there can be no comparison between India's requests for extradition of wanted persons with that of US as Pakistan's relations with both the countries were on a different footing.

For Pakistan to respond in the same manner, Islamabad and New Delhi should have same kind of relations like that of US and Pakistan, he said.
