Kerala govt employees call off strike

The 32-day-old strike by over 500,000 government employees and teachers in Kerala was called off on Saturday.

The decision to call off the strike was separately announced in state capital Thiruvananthapuram by the employees unions owing allegiance to the Congress and the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front following talks with the Congress-led United Democratic Front government, which made some face-saving concessions to the employees.

Shortly after the two-hour long talks, the unions held separate parleys to consider the government's offer before announcing their decision to call off the stir, which had paralysed the government machinery for over a month.

As per the settlement offer, the government agreed to reduce by half the cut made in pension commutation as part of cost-cutting drive and defer till June the proposal to halve the salary of 'protected' teachers rendered surplus.

The government, however, did not budge on its resolve to apply the no work-no pay principle during the strike period or yield to the key demand for restoration of surrender leave encashment.

It also promised to expedite legal steps for the release of about 521 employees detained under Essential Services maintenance Act (ESMA) and withdraw cases registered against them in connection with the strike which began on February six.
