Hurriyat Conference leader arrested in Kashmir

Senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader and press in-charge of All-Parties Hurriyat Conference, Ayaz Akbar, was on Friday arrested from Parimpora locality of Srinagar, official sources said.

Without giving the reason for his arrest, the sources said that the police intercepted Akbar, a close associate of former Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, while he was on his way to Hurriyat headquarters at Rajbagh.

Reacting to the arrest, a spokesman of Hurriyat Conference said, "Such arrests will not weaken the movement for right of self-determination in Jammu and Kashmir, as it is not the movement launched by Hurriyat Conference but has the backing of the people of the state."
