38 bodies recovered; Gujarat toll mounts to 607

Thirty-eight more bodies were recovered from deserted and burnt houses of Gujarat that witnessed week-long violence, taking the toll to 607, while the situation in Ahmedabad continued to remain peaceful on Thursday.

The police said that as many as 30 bodies, mostly burnt, were recovered from the houses in the city on Wednesday, which were set afire by a violent mob on February 28.

Three bodies were found in Surat, while five others were recovered from the houses in Sabarkantha district.

In Ahmedabad the search for bodies was carried out in the worst hit areas of Naroda Patia, Chamanpura, Meghaninagar and other areas on the city outskirts, where a large number of houses and shops were set ablaze by the mob.

Meanwhile, at least 212 bodies have been given a mass burial in Dudheshwar, Juhapura and Sarkhej in the past few days.

Elsewhere, night curfew remained in force in Vejalpur, Dariapur, Bapunagar, Rakhial and Gomtipur police station areas, police said.

In Mehmdabad in Kheda district, curfew, which was imposed on Wednesday following stabbing incidents, continued for the second day on Thursday.

The restrictions, imposed at 47 places of the state following widespread violence, was being gradually lifted from some areas as the situation was limping back to normal, the police added.
