Gujarat announces compensation for carnage victims

The Government of Gujarat has decided to pay a compensation of Rs 200,000 each to the kin of the 'Ram sevaks' killed in the attack on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra railway station and Rs 100,000 for those who died in the subsequent communal violence in the state.

The compensation of Rs 200,000 will be given to those killed in the railway station carnage "as per the precedent given to Ayodhya victims in the past", Additional Chief Secretary C K Koshi told the Press Trust of India in Ahmedabad.

"In Gujarat normally the death compensation of Rs 1 lakh has been given to those who died in any communal riots or other violence as per the state government resolution of 1991-92," he said.

The government would issue a resolution pertaining to compensation in case of injuries, which would range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 50,000 depending on the seriousness and nature of injuries, Koshi added.

Meanwhile, district collectors have been asked to constitute teams to assess the damage to houses in their areas. "On the basis of their assessment, compensation up to Rs 50,000 will be given," Koshi said.
