Restore confidence of Muslims: Shahnawaz to PM

Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain on Monday urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to restore the confidence of Muslims saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party's image had suffered a setback due to the riots in Gujarat.

Hussain, who visited Gujarat along with Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Sunday, said he had met the prime minister on Monday to apprise him of the situation.

Asked if he blamed the state government for the flare up in the aftermath of Godhra incident, he said, "We would have taken credit if we were able to control the situation."

Hussain said many Muslim delegations had met him and they wanted to know why their community was being punished for the attack on the Sabarmati Express.

He said the perpetrators of the Godhra carnage and the riots that followed it should be brought to book.
