Two killed in police firing in Palanpur

Two persons were killed in Palanpur, about 300 km from Ahmedabad, when police opened fire to quell an unruly mob on Monday, official sources said.

Police opened fire in Danta village of Palanpur taluka after tear gas shells failed to have the desired effect on the crowd.

The number of people killed in police firing in Gujarat since February 27's incident in Godhra has now risen to 79.

Over 420 people have been killed in Gujarat in the last five days of communal violence.

Police have arrested 2,853 people for their involvement in arson and looting across the state.
