Gujarat carnage a blot on
nation's image: PM

Terming the Gujarat carnage a 'blot' on the nation's image, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday voiced confidence that the current frenzy would subside and communal harmony restored in the state.

A day after a meeting of leaders of major political parties, Vajpayee said the gruesome killings of people in Godhra, Ahmedabad and other places in Gujarat has damaged India's reputation before the international community.

In an appeal to the people over 'Doordarshan', the prime minister said he was confident that the country would be able to overcome this crisis, like it has others in the past, and create an atmosphere of peace and harmony.

Vajpayee said he was sure that people of all religions would consider the appeal made by leaders of major political parties and help the authorities to create communal harmony.

"The country is going through a difficult phase," he said adding that whatever may be the provocation, people should exercise restraint and ensure peace.
