situation: PM

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Friday that the Centre would effectively and firmly deal with the situation in Gujarat and joined the opposition parties in issuing an appeal to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony.

After a meeting held at the prime minister's residence in New Delhi, Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan said that the people of Gujarat had been requested to maintain peace and isolate the perpetrators of violence in the state.

According to Mahajan, the leaders told the people that it was their responsibility to promote brotherhood and unity at all costs.

He also underscored that the government would not let the situation in Ayodhya spiral out of control.

Among those who signed the appeal were Vajpayee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujaral, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, BJP leader Jana Krishnamurthy, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet and Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Later, the prime minister briefed President K R Narayanan on the situation in Gujarat.
