Singhal brings Ayodhya to Kurukshetra

Tara Shankar Sahay in Kurukshetra

The presence of Vishwa Hindu Parishad chief Ashok Singhal at the crucial Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh meeting in Kurukshetra on Saturday indicated that the Ayodhya tangle would top the agenda during the two-day meet.

When asked by a small group of reporters about the significance of the VHP chief's presence at the meeting, RSS chief K Sudarshan said: "He was also present before, but the media probably did not take note if it."

The RSS leaders are maintaining strict secrecy on the issues to be discussed at the meeting. Young party cadres clad in khakhi shorts and white shirts are guarding the two gates to the venue -- Geeta Nekatan.

While reporters were briefly allowed inside, they were told that they would be briefed about the deliberations after various resolutions were adopted.

Delhi RSS unit publicity in-charge Kishore Kant told reporters that the construction of a temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya would be discussed at the meeting.

Sangh leaders have indicated that they are unhappy that despite assuring the VHP that the masjid-mandir issue would be solved by June this year, precious little had been done about it and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had merely played for time.

Apart from the RSS chief and senior leaders M G Vaidya and Madan Das Devi, 250 delegates representing 36 RSS centres are attending the meeting in Kurukshetra.

The deliberations for Saturday have been divided into five sittings and would continue well into the evening.
