The government carried out several changes at the top levels of the army on Thursday, appointing new chiefs for some corps, including formations deployed on the Pakistan border.
According to army sources, 16 Corps, which controls the sensitive Jammu border, 12 Corps, and 21 Corps, a strike formation deployed on the frontier in Rajasthan, are all getting new commanders.
Lieutenant General J B S Yadav, commander of the Nagrota-based 16 Corps, will take over as deputy chief of army staff (training and personnel). Major General T P S Brar, who is being promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, will take over as the new 16 Corps commander.
Major General P S Subrahmanyam, who is also being promoted to lieutenant general rank, will be the new 12 Corps commander, replacing Lieutenant General Hari Prasad, who is taking over as director general, infantry.
Major General P P S Bhandari, who too has been recommended for promotion, will be the new chief of 21 Corps, one of India's three strike corps.
Lieutenant General Ashok Chaki will be the new deputy chief of army staff for policy and personnel.
Major General Mohinder Singh will take over command of the Northeast-based 4 Corps, while Major General Aftar Singh would take charge of 33 Corps. Both of them are also being promoted to lieutenant general.
Sources said these promotions and transfers were routine and had nothing to do with the present deployment of forces on the border with Pakistan.
