Militants lob grenades at NC session venue

Militants on Sunday lobbed two grenades towards the Sher-i-Kashmir cricket stadium where the daylong special session of National Conference is underway, the police said.

No loss of life or damage to property was reported as the grenades, which exploded in quick succession, fell short of their target by over 300 metres and landed in a drain, Inspector General of Police K Rajindra Kumar said.

The blasts caused little panic among the NC delegates. Omar Abdullah, who took over as the president at the special party session and was in the midst of his speech, dismissed the blasts as 'salutation to his take over' and continued with his speech.

Director General of Police A K Suri along with several senior officials immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The attack, seen as a 'desperate bid' of the militants came amid tight security arrangements made for the session.

Police are investigating as to where the grenades, believed to have been fired from rifles, came from.
