'Truth Sera' being administered to Godhra carnage accused

Our Correspondent in Ahmedabad

Authorities investigating the burning of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, which left 58 people dead, are administering 'Truth Sera' (chemical name: Sodium Amytal), a drug that makes people speak the truth even against their will, to the seven accused arrested in the case.

Highly placed Gujarat Police sources told rediff.com that the probe teams are also taking the help of psychoanalysts to solve the case.

However, none of the seven accused, including prime accused Haji Bilal Sujela and Mohammed Hussain Kalota, have admitted that they had burnt the train, the sources said.

A police official said that each session -- at Ahmedabad's SSG hospital -- continues for four hours with the accused being given anaesthetic drugs first, to make them semi-conscious, before administering the 'Truth Sera'.

During interrogation, top forensic officials, National Human Rights Commission officials, Government Railway Police and CID officers were present, the sources said.

"It is a confidential inquiry and it would not be proper to comment on anything since it would affect the further investigations," GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police J K Bhatt said.

The procedure was carried out with the consent of the accused, the sources said.

"There is no chance of mischief in the interrogation and everything is recorded on video," an official said.
