Moderate tremor rocks north Bengal

A moderate earthquake rocked parts of north Bengal on Thursday, officials said in Siliguri.

There was no report of any casualty or damage to property in the quake, which rocked Darjeeling Hills, Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur and Coochbehar districts at 1110 hours IST, they said.

An Indian Meteorological Department spokesman said in Kolkata that the tremor was of moderate intensity and measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.

"The epicentre of the quake was 26.6 degree north latitude and 88.9 degree east longitude at an yet unidentified place near the India-Bangladesh border," the spokesman added.

Subir Sarkar, head of the department of geography in North Bengal University, said that the epicentre might be Domor area in Bangladesh's Rangpur district, with the epicentre 30 km below the surface.
