Cong rules out change of leadership in Maharashtra

The Congress on Wednesday ruled out any change of leadership in Maharashtra or even in the state party unit.

"There is no crisis in the state. It is over," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters in Delhi.

The only proposal before the party was to see that there was better coordination among various factions of the party leadership in the state, he said adding Congress president Sonia Gandhi has appointed a nine-member coordination committee to this end.

On party MLAs and some senior leaders from the state meeting with the central leadership in the capital, he said, "They have every right to raise their problems."

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said a proposal for cabinet expansion would be submitted to the party high command within a fortnight even as efforts were on to take sulking Peasants and Workers' Party (PWP) members back in the ministry.

"The expansion will be decided in consultation with all the DF partners," Deshmukh told reporters in Mumbai.

Prior to the withdrawal of support, the five-MLA strong PWP had three members in the Deshmukh ministry and their pulling out of the ruling coalition in May triggered a spate of defections and the worst ever political crisis for the Congress-NCP led government.
