Mob attacks Sena leader Rane's residence

The comfortable victory of the Vilasrao Deshmukh government in the confidence vote triggered violent scenes with jubilant Nationalist Congress Party activists stoning the official residence of the leader of the opposition and Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane, located adjacent to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The police lobbed teargas shells as the mob set ablaze a motorbike parked in the vicinity.

A cameraman of a television channel and a few policemen were injured in the incident.

Also targeted was the deputy chairman of the Legislative Council and NCP leader Vasant Davkhare's residence, a few metres away from Rane's residence.

Police sources claimed that Sena and NCP supporters clashed soon after the news spread about the government winning the trust motion.

"We cordoned off the entire area and the situation was brought under control," a senior police official said.

The stray incidents of violence have come amid reports that Rane and BJP legislative wing leader Gopinath Munde could be arrested for alleged role in 'keeping rebel Democratic Front MLAs in forcible confinement'.
