Majority of Naga MLAs in Manipur abstain from special session

Majority of Manipur's Naga MLAs on Wednesday abstained from the one-day special session of the House called to discuss protection of territories of the state following the reported demand of the NSCN (I-M) to merge some portions of the state with Nagaland.

There are 10 Naga MLAs belonging to various parties in Manipur.

When the session began at 1100 hours IST, all the Naga MLAs cutting across party lines, abstained from the House.

However, four Congress members Gaikhangam, R K Thekho, A Aza and Z Mangaibou turned up at around 1220 hours.

Works minister and senior Congress leader Gaikhangam, who was present when the House assembled left seconds before the discussion began. He later returned with three of his party colleagues.

However, another Congress member Francis Ngajokpa was not with them.

Before starting the discussions, Speaker T N Haokip said Federal Party of Manipur MLA Samuel Jendai (a Naga member) had expressed his inability to attend the session as he was 'indisposed.'

P S Hentry Paotei (Federal Party of Manipur), Wungnaoshang (Manipur State Congress Party) and B D Behring and D Shaiza (BJP) abstained. However, they have not given any reason for their decision.
