Omar to take over as NC chief on June 23

Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah is expected to take over the National Conference at a convention in Srinagar on June 23.

"The new leadership would be elected on June 23 as per the party constitution by delegates from all the three regions of the state -- Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir," party general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said on Tuesday.

Omar was expected to take over from his father, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, he said, adding, "this augurs well for the state as it is the need of the hour."

On the issue of autonomy to the state, Ahmad alleged that the Centre had never fulfilled its promises to Kashmiri leaders from time to time.

"Internal autonomy is our constitutional and political identity, which has been snatched from us unconstitutionally," he said.

Ahmad asked the Centre "to provide Kashmiris a monetary package in addition to internal autonomy to heal their wounds".
