It is better that a person acceptable to all is elected as president when the country is facing an 'undeclared war', she said.
"Otherwise, it will send wrong signals to the rest of the world," she told reporters in Chennai.
She said she would discuss the presidential poll with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during her visit to New Delhi next week.
Vajpayee had already had telephonic consultations with her on the issue, Jayalalithaa added.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee said her party had left the issue of selecting the NDA candidate for the presidential poll to Prime Minister Vajpayee.
