Beleaguered Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday conceded that in the current atmosphere of uncertainty, it would be difficult for any government to survive in the state.
"A fresh mandate is always better than a fractured mandate," Deshmukh said in reply to a question by a reporter at his official residence in Mumbai.
He, however, said he was confident that his government would survive the vote of confidence on the floor of the House, tentatively scheduled for June 12 or 13.
A series of desertions by MLAs belonging to the Peasants and Workers' Party, the Nationalist Congress Party and some independents has brought Deshmukh's government into minority.
While the NCP has flown its remaining MLAs to Indore, the Congress MLAs have been taken to Bangalore.
Deshmukh described as "shocking" the crossing over of Congress MLA Padmakar Valvi to the Shiv Sena-BJP camp.
