AIADMK captures 2 assembly seats
in by-polls

The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu on Sunday wrested the Acharapakkam (reserved) and Vaniyambadi seats, the by-polls for which were held on May 31, taking its strength in the 234-member assembly to 134.

In Acharapakkam, AIADMK candidate A Boovarahamurthy defeated his nearest Pattali Makkal Katchi rival D Parvendhan by a margin of 17,917 votes, the state election office announced. The DMK had given this seat to the PMK as part of their seat sharing agreement.

In Vaniyambadi, party candidate Vadivelu defeated Hanifa of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by 19,721 votes.

The Election Commission has kept in abeyance the counting of votes in Saidapet assembly constituency following complaints of rigging during the Friday by-polls and has ordered a 'broad-based' inquiry.
