Kaziranga National Park reeling under floods

Kaziranga National Park, famed for its one-horned rhino, is reeling under the impact of floods with almost the entire area submerged by swirling waters of the Brahmaputra, which left 30 animals dead, park sources said on Wednesday.

The entire 430 sq km area of the park is under water, barring the natural and artificial uplands constructed for the safety of the animals, the sources added.

Among the animals, which were forced out of the park by the floods were a few Royal Bengal tigers, three herds of elephants numbering more than 100, hog deers and several rhinos, who have all moved to higher places, they said.

A round-the-clock vigil was being maintained inside the park to prevent the animals from being killed by speeding vehicles and poachers. Several boats were also pressed into service for the purpose, they said.

A 50-km stretch of National Highway-37 passes along the park that the animals have to cross to reach the adjoining hills of Karbi Anglong to escape the flood waters, they said.

"Most of the animals killed in the current wave of floods were by speeding vehicles along the highway," they added.
