One more arrested in Ahmedabad rathyatra case

One more person, involved in the conspiracy to attack the Jagannath rathyatra (chariot procession) in the city on July 12, was nabbed by the crime branch in Ahmedabad on Friday, taking the number of those arrested to 11.

'Riaz alias Diggy Ibrahim Sheikh alias Darbar was arrested near Rupali cinema. He is an accomplice of Shabbir Sheikh, the main conspirator in the rathyatra case, who is still at large', police sources said.

On the day of the rathyatra, the city crime branch officials had claimed to have averted a 'major suicide bomb' attack in Shahpur.

The police had told mediapersons that they had nabbed 14 persons and seized a huge haul of firearms, including five locally made rocket launchers, nine country-made pistols, 20 grenades and sutli bombs and averted a major mishap.

Shabbir had allegedly conspired to attack the yatra to take revenge for his son's death in police firing during the recent communal violence, police said.

He had bought firearms and later distributed them to anti-social elements in Dariapur, Shahpur and other places to give effect to his plan, police added.
