US praises Musharraf for curbing cross-border terrorism

Rejecting yet again India's demand to term Pakistan a 'terrorist state', the United States has hailed President Pervez Musharraf for taking steps to curb cross-border terrorism and providing active support in the war against Al Qaeda.

"President Musharraf has taken strong action in the war against terror, Al Qaeda or the Taliban, as well as taken steps to diminish cross-border incursions into Kashmir. President Bush is pleased with the actions Musharraf has taken," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters on Tuesday.

Fleischer was responding to a question on what message Secretary of State Colin Powell would be carrying to New Delhi after India's Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani appealed to the US to brand Pakistan a terrorist state following the recent attack in Jammu in which 29 people were killed.

Fleischer said the tension between India and Pakistan had reached a flashpoint twice this year, and claimed that it was defused chiefly because of US diplomacy.

"As a result of a lot of intervention and diplomacy by the president, state department, [and] Secretary Powell, the situation is much more defused", he said. "The United States will continue to actively work in the region."
