Farooq again rules out President's rule in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Sunday again ruled out the possibility of imposition of Governor's rule in the state, but reiterated conduct of 'free and fair election to the state assembly scheduled in October'.

Abdullah was talking to newsmen after the concluding function of Royal Springs Open Golf tournament in Srinagar.

Asked if Governor's rule was essential for 'transparency', Abdullah said, "Will you dismiss all the chief ministers before elections to show transparency? We have won under the President's rule and nobody should suspect us. We have assured free and fair election."

"Election is an important ingredient of democracy and not merely meant to show transparency to the international community," Abdullah said.

The chief minister lashed out at those who 'want to usurp power without facing the electorate'.

"In fact, some people want to come to the power from backdoor as they don't enjoy the public support," he said. "My party will resist such moves with its full might."

Abdullah said the 'era of imposing Article 356 has gone and those thinking of Governor's rule must appreciate its consequences as well'.
