Ninety-seven terrorists infiltrated into J&K in June

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Ninety-seven terrorists had infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir during the month of June, while there were about 70 to 80 terrorist training camps operating in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, Defence Minister George Fernandes told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

"ISI continues to harbour, train and fund the terrorist organisations operating in Jammu and Kashmir," Fernandes said.

He said adequate measures had been taken to check terrorist infiltration. These included a "multi-tiered defensive-cum-counter infiltration posture on the line of control, with all known routes of infiltration being guarded and patrolled by troops deployed on ground".

He said, "Although due to configuration of terrain and the prevailing climatic conditions, it was not possible to hermetically seal the LoC, the counter-infiltration posture was being constantly reviewed based on intelligence inputs."

Claiming that the army had put in place suitable measure through a continuous process of technological upgrades and refinement in operating procedures, Fernandes said that as per reports available, the army and the Rashtriya Rifles had killed 762 terrorists in J&K between January and June.

Infiltration into J&K, he said, continued, though there was a marginal reduction.

According to him, four infiltration bids were foiled in June, in which 14 terrorists were killed.

Asserting that the falling trend needed to be watched for some more time before any conclusive assessment could be drawn, Fernandes said that the marginal reduction in infiltration could be attributed to the enhanced vigil being maintained by the Indian troops.
