Sushil Kumar Shinde is opposition's candidate for Vice-President

Senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde was on Thursday named the consensus candidate of the opposition parties for the post of Vice-President.

He will take on NDA nominee Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the August 12 election.

"There is a consensus on the candidature of Shinde," Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters in Delhi.

Earlier, Left Parties had said that they would support any candidate fielded by the opposition for the vice-presidential poll.

"As Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has already said he would not consult opposition parties for the vice-presidential poll, we will support any candidate of the opposition," CPI-M leader Nilotpal Basu said.
