Gujarat government may force EC
to call early polls

The Gujarat government may make use of a technicality to force the Election Commission to hold elections in the state, informed sources told PTI.

The assembly has not met after April five this year.

The Election Commission is constitutionally bound to hold elections if any state assembly has not had a single sitting for six months, the sources explained.

They said that dissolution of the House without having met even once would give the Election Commission very little scope for delaying elections.

The assembly may, in fact, be dissolved as early as next week, they said.

Earlier, the Commission had ruled out holding early elections in the state.

It had also made it clear that only the Commission had the authority to talk about it.
