Shankarsinh Vaghela appointed
Gujarat Congress president

Former Gujarat chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela was on Tuesday appointed president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee replacing Amarsinh Chaudhary who has been made the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

Vaghela, a former BJP leader with links to the Sangh Parivar, was chief minister of a short-lived government, formed after he rebelled against the BJP leadership in 1997, and supported by the Congress and the Janata Dal.

He later joined the Congress.

A backward caste leader, Vaghela is expected to lead the party in the assembly elections in the state.

The appointment made by party president Sonia Gandhi would be with immediate effect, party spokesman Anand Sharma said.

Amarsinh Chaudhary, who had earlier resigned as GPCC president, has expressed happiness over his appointment as CLP leader, he added.
