Three people, including an armyman and two peasants, were killed at Wanigam Pattan village in northern Baramulla district on Monday morning during an encounter with militants.
The police in Srinagar said that the two villagers, Ghulam Mohammed Lone and Ghulam Mohammed Bhat, and a subedar of the 29 Rashtriya Rifles, Atiq-ur Rahman, died in cross firing during search operations in Wanigam.
The killing of the two farmers triggered protests and nearly 3000 villagers blocked the strategic Srinagar-Uri highway.
"Militants opened fire on the troops, who returned the fire and in the cross firing three people, including the two villagers and an armyman died," the police said.
The villagers, however, alleged that the security forces shot dead both the farmers, while they were irrigating their paddy fields.
As the news about the killing of the farmers spread, the villagers took their bodies and blocked the strategic Srinagar-Uri highway.
Scores of vehicles were stranded on the highway, sources said, and added that senior police and civil officials have rushed to the spot.
