Over 3,000 MDMK men taken into preventive custody

Over 3,000 MDMK workers had been taken into preventive custody all over Tamil Nadu following the party's announcement that it would organise protests in various parts of the state if its party chief V Gopalaswamy, popularly known as Vaiko, was arrested for his 'pro-LTTE remarks' at a meeting at Tirumangalam on June 29 last.

Police said the arrested included the party's presidium chairman L Ganesan, who was picked up near Ariyalur on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, a report from Coimbatore said over 450 MDMK workers were taken into preventive custody from Coimbatore and Erode districts.

While over 320 workers were arrested in Coimbatore district alone, the rest were picked up from various places in Erode district, police said.

The arrested included the party's labour wing general secretary S Doraisamy, state youth wing deputy secretary Thamburaju and Erode district women's wing secretary Tamil Selvi.

Over 40 anti-social elements were also arrested in Erode district as a precautionary measure, they said.

At Madurai, nearly 250 party workers were taken into custody, while at Tiruchirappalli, the party's urban district secretary Malarmannan was among the 60 detained.

A Salem report said MDMK state joint secretary Palanicham was among those taken into custody. At least 65 persons were detained in Dharmapuri, Salem and Namakkal, the report said.
