Haryana chief secretary removed

In a sudden development Haryana Chief Secretary L M Goyal was on Thursday replaced by his junior A N Mathur, an official release said in Chandigarh.

Goyal will replace Mathur as financial commissioner (revenue and consolidation), it said.

No reason has been given for the sudden change.

The seniormost officer of the state IAS cadre Deepak Dass Gupta is on deputation to the Centre and is posted as chairman of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), official sources said.

Goyal is to retire in May 2003 while Mathur is to retire in 2004.

At present, Goyal is on a tour of Europe.

Repeated attempts to contact Mathur failed while Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala was stated to have gone to Delhi.

No other officer was ready to speak on the issue though sources said that the change was prompted by Goyal leaving on a tour of Europe within two days after returning from a foreign trip that had taken a group, including the chief minister, to seven countries, including China.
